Free Eye Screening for Preterm Babies at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital Uganda
On 24 March 2026, Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda supported a free eye screening outreach for preterm babies at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.
The screening was conducted by Dr. Iddi Ndyabawe and reached 44 preterm infants, providing critical early checks for eye conditions that can affect vision if left untreated.
Why Eye Screening Matters for Preterm Babies
Preterm babies are at risk of serious eye conditions such as Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), which can lead to vision loss if not detected early.
Regular screening helps:
Detect eye conditions early
Enable timely treatment
Prevent avoidable blindness
Improve long-term outcomes for preterm babies
Bringing Care Closer to Families
Many families are unable to access specialized eye care due to cost, distance, or lack of awareness.
By offering free screening services, this outreach helped remove those barriers and ensured that vulnerable babies received the care they need.
A Step Toward Better Preterm Care in Uganda
This activity is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen support for preterm babies beyond the NICU, ensuring they receive follow-up care that protects their growth, development, and vision.
Conclusion
Early screening saves sight.
By reaching 44 babies in one day, this initiative brought critical care closer to families and strengthened the chances of healthy development for preterm infants in Uganda.
