Free Kangaroo Mother Care Wraps in Uganda Supporting Preterm Babies and Families

Free Kangaroo Mother Care Wraps in Uganda Supporting Preterm Babies and Families
At Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda, we are working to remove one of the most overlooked barriers to preterm baby survival access to proper Kangaroo Mother Care wraps. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a life saving practice where a preterm baby is held skin to skin against a parent’s chest for long periods. It helps regulate the baby’s temperature, supports breastfeeding, and improves survival. However, many families in Uganda are unable to practice KMC effectively because they do not have the right wraps to hold their babies safely and comfortably. Why KMC Wraps Matter Without proper wraps, parents struggle to: Maintain continuous skin to skin contact Secure the baby safely for long hours Practice KMC while resting or moving Sustain KMC after leaving the hospital As a result, many babies miss out on consistent care that could save their lives. Our Solution: Free KMC Wrap Distribution To address this gap, we provide free Kangaroo Mother Care wraps to vulnerable families with preterm babies. These wraps are: Designed for safe and continuous skin to skin care Comfortable for both mother and baby Easy to use at home and in hospital settings Culturally appropriate and practical for daily use By removing the cost barrier, more families are able to continue KMC beyond the hospital. Supporting Parents Beyond the NICU Receiving a wrap is not just about the material it is about enabling care. Alongside wrap distribution, we support parents with: Guidance on how to practice Kangaroo Mother Care correctly Encouragement to continue KMC at home Ongoing peer and community support This ensures that KMC is not started and abandoned but sustained. Impact on Preterm Baby Survival Access to proper KMC wraps helps: Increase the number of hours babies receive skin to skin care Improve breastfeeding and weight gain Reduce risk of hypothermia and infection Build parental confidence in caring for preterm babies Small support like a wrap can lead to life changing outcomes. A Simple Intervention With Powerful Results For many families, something as simple as a wrap makes the difference between inconsistent care and continuous life saving support. At Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda, we believe no parent should be unable to care for their baby because of something so basic. Conclusion Free Kangaroo Mother Care wraps are helping families across Uganda give their preterm babies a better chance to survive and thrive. Because when parents are equipped, babies survive.
