Women’s Day Support for Mothers of Preterm Babies at Kawempe National Referral Hospital Uganda
On International Women’s Day, Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda supported mothers of preterm babies at Kawempe National Referral Hospital with essential care supplies. Mothers in neonatal units often spend long periods in hospital caring for their babies, with limited access to basic necessities. This support was aimed at easing that burden during a critical time. The distributed items included: Sanitary towels Sugar and rice Basins Baby clothes Vaseline Why This Support Matters For mothers of preterm babies, daily needs do not stop during hospital stays. Many face: Financial strain from prolonged admission Limited access to food and hygiene products Physical exhaustion and emotional stress Difficulty meeting basic personal needs while caring for their babies Providing these essentials helps mothers maintain their wellbeing while staying present for their infants. Supporting Mothers Is Supporting Babies When mothers are supported, they are better able to: Breastfeed consistently Practice Kangaroo Mother Care Stay close to their babies Recover physically and emotionally This directly improves outcomes for preterm babies. A Meaningful Way to Mark Women’s Day This initiative recognized the strength and resilience of mothers caring for preterm babies, ensuring they felt seen, supported, and valued. Conclusion Small acts of support can make a big difference. By providing essential supplies on Women’s Day, we helped mothers focus on what matters most caring for their babies during one of the most challenging moments of their lives.
