Supporting Nutrition and Financial Stability for Families With Preterm Babies in Uganda

Supporting Nutrition and Financial Stability for Families With Preterm Babies in Uganda
At Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda, we address a reality most newborn programs ignore: a preterm baby cannot thrive if the family is financially collapsing. A baby may survive the NICU, but many families leave the hospital facing lost income, rising costs, and uncertainty about how they will feed and care for their child. Why Nutrition and Financial Support Matter for Preterm Babies Preterm infants need more nutrition than full-term babies. They often require: * More frequent feeding * Nutrient-dense foods for growth * Extra support for breastfeeding and maternal nutrition * Regular follow-up care after discharge Yet many families in Uganda face: * Food insecurity and limited access to nutritious meals * Loss of income due to long hospital stays and caregiving demands * High costs of transport, clothing, follow-up visits, and special feeding needs * Limited knowledge about affordable ways to feed and care for a preterm baby Without support, these pressures can lead to poor nutrition, interrupted care, repeated hospital admissions, and long-term health problems. Our Solution: An Integrated Nutrition and Income Model Under our work to build stronger families for every preterm baby, PIPNU tackles malnutrition and financial hardship at the same time. We do not believe families should have to choose between feeding their baby and paying for transport or rent. 1. Fortified Nutrition and Parent Employment The PIPNU Fortified Porridge Initiative PIPNU is developing a locally produced fortified porridge for preterm infants and lactating mothers. The porridge is: * Nutrient-rich and designed to support growth and recovery * Made using affordable local ingredients * Sold at 50% below market price so vulnerable families can access it * Produced by parents of preterm infants who have lost jobs or income This means parents are not only receiving support, they are helping create it. Through the initiative, parent workers: * Earn stable income * Learn food production and safe packaging * Gain skills in quality control, business, and distribution * Contribute to a sustainable model that supports other families Monthly parent contributions and reinvestment help keep the initiative running and fund peer support for the most vulnerable families. 2. Employment Through KMC Wrap Production PIPNU also supports parents through the production of Kangaroo Mother Care wraps. Parents who need income can help make affordable KMC wraps that are then distributed to vulnerable families. This creates two solutions at once: * Families receive the wraps they need to safely practice Kangaroo Mother Care * Parents gain employment and a source of income while supporting other preterm babies You can learn more about our Kangaroo Mother Care support through our campaign, *Kangaroo Care for Every Preemie*. 3. Building Financial Resilience for Families We support parents to become more financially secure through: * Small parent-led businesses * Financial literacy and budgeting training * Cooperative savings and community support groups * Skills in entrepreneurship and group management We also help reduce the cost of caring for a preterm baby by sharing: * Affordable feeding and care practices * Clothes, KMC wraps, and baby supplies between families * Parent-to-parent support and practical advice 4. Community Contribution Funds Some families are pushed into crisis by transport costs, medicine, or missing work to care for their baby. To prevent this, PIPNU is building community contribution funds where parents support one another. These funds help the most vulnerable families access: * Emergency transport * Basic nutrition support * KMC wraps and clothing * Follow-up care after discharge Stronger Families Mean Stronger Babies Preterm babies do not survive on medicine alone. They survive when their parents have food, income, support, and hope. At Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda, we are building a future where every family has the strength and resources to care for their baby. Because supporting a preterm baby means supporting the whole family.
