Partner with PIPNU to improve preterm infant survival and strengthen neonatal care systems
Partner with Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda to Improve Preterm Infant Survival
Preterm Infants Parents Network Uganda(PIPNU) bridges the critical gap between hospital care and home survival for preterm infants in Uganda. Acting as an extension of neonatal units, we support families after discharge, reinforce clinical guidance, and track outcomes in the community.
Benefits of Partnership
- Extend Care Beyond Discharge: Village Kangaroo Ambassadors (VKAs) follow families at home, supporting Kangaroo Mother Care, feeding, and adherence to medical guidance.
- Reduce Preventable Readmissions: Early identification of danger signs prevents emergencies and late presentations.
- Strengthen Family-Centered Care: Confident, supported caregivers improve infant outcomes and satisfaction.
- Contribute to National Evidence: Hospital partners feed data into Uganda's national preterm birth database for planning and policy.
Collaboration Approach
Refer Families at Discharge: Infants <37 weeks or <2.5 kg are enrolled; VKAs follow up within 48 hours. Pre-discharge warm-handoff recommended.
Integrate PIPNU Programs in Units:
- Wall of Hope for emotional support in NICUs
- Parent mentor integration for peer support
- Joint staff training on family-centered care and post-discharge continuity
Co-Design Quality Improvement & Research: Monitor outcomes, refine protocols, and collaborate on research and publications.
